Presented by the
University of Rochester Alumni Board

featuring
Lisa Kahn
Professor, Economics

and moderated by
Fariha Raisa ’22
Double major in economics and applied mathematics.

Thursday, October 15, 2020
Noon - 1 p.m. (ET)

During this Experience Rochester webinar, Professor Lisa Kahn will share explanations and predictions for the country's economic recovery. Her research suggests that the economic collapse was not caused solely by the stay-at-home orders and would not be undone simply by lifting them. It hit all US states, regardless of stay-at-home policies and it spanned nearly all industries and occupations. Listen and ask questions as Professor Kahn reviews US labor market trends during the COVID crisis and discusses the broad-based nature of the economic collapse in March and April. She will also delve into how employment rebounded in May and June—gaining half the ground lost in early spring—but has since slowed.

We kindly ask that you register in advance by clicking the "Register Here" button above. If you have a question you would like to share with our speakers in advance, please include it on your form when you register.

A link to join the lecture will be sent prior to the start of the session.

Speaker bios:

Lisa Kahn
Lisa Kahn is a professor of economics at the University of Rochester. Her research focuses on labor economics with interests in organizations and education. Her most recent work uses data on job vacancy postings to examine whether the Great Recession accelerated technological change, exacerbating polarization of the US economy. She has also developed a methodology for measuring the contributions of employer learning and productivity evolution in determining life-cycle earnings. In previous work, she examined the consequences of graduating from college in an economic downturn, finding surprisingly long-lasting, negative wage effects. That paper won the award for the best paper published in Labour Economics in 2010-11.

Professor Kahn was previously an associate professor of economics at Yale School of Management. From 2010 to 2011, she served on President Obama's Council of Economic Advisers as the senior economist for labor and education policy. She has also been a visiting fellow at Brookings Institution and is currently a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research and an IZA Research Fellow. Professor Kahn is currently on the executive board for the Society of Labor Economists. She holds an AB in economics from the University of Chicago (2003) and an MA and a PhD in economics from Harvard University (2008).
