Join Shane Campbell-Staton ’08, assistant professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at Princeton University, for an engaging discussion on how the human footprint is transforming the planet and how science, politics, and culture are intricately connected in unexpected ways. Campbell-Staton will share his groundbreaking research of these real world connections and the unique way he utilizes audio and visual media to bring science to the public including the development of his upcoming PBS documentary, Human Footprint.

University of Rochester Trustee Curtis J. Johnson ’88 will facilitate a conversation on Campbell-Staton’s personal story of the challenges he overcame at Rochester and elsewhere, the opportunities he’s cultivated, and the life lessons he’s learned along the way.

Featuring opening remarks by Sarah C. Mangelsdorf, president and G. Robert Witmer, Jr. University Professor.

Speaker Bio:

Shane Campbell-Staton ’08, assistant professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at Princeton University, has dedicated his life to exploring human-driven evolution and understanding the lasting biological impacts of our human footprint. After graduating from School Without Walls in Rochester, Campbell-Staton received his bachelor of science in ecology and evolutionary biology from the University of Rochester. He went on to earn his PhD from Harvard University, became a National Science Foundation Research Fellow, and currently, along with his professorship, leads a research group, The Campbell-Staton Group, at Princeton University.

Campbell-Staton’s passion for science and the natural world was kindled by nature documentaries and TV shows as a child. He takes an innovative approach to sharing cutting edge research by using graphic novels, movies and television shows to make the information accessible for all. Coming this summer, Campbell-Staton will host Human Footprint, a 6-episode, part-science, part-travel PBS documentary series exploring how humans are transforming our environment and what that tells us about who we are as a species.

Presented by the Office of Alumni Relations and Constituent Engagement, in partnership with the Black Alumni Network, Institutional Office of Equity and Inclusion, and Diversity Advisory Council.
